[attr="class","star2tsu4"]Baki shivers as she arrives back on shore. She's dry by now, but that doesn't help a thing. The mirage has long disappeared beyond the horizon at this point, but that doesn't stop its consequences from weighing on her mind even now. [break][break]

Despite the cast on her leg, the fresh bandages on her arms, and the blood stains on her clothes, she pushes past the crowd and toward town. Taking care of herself is the last thing on her mind, especially after being detained by the paramedics so long.[break][break]

There's only one place will go after this, if she knows him well enough. [break][break]

It's a hassle to push the door of the Gym open. She manages fine, given the circumstances. Even so, by the time she slams the door open and limps inside, she's visibly frustrated by her lack of mobility. [break][break]

"NAVY! NAVY, I'M HERE! WHERE ARE YOU!?"[break][break]

She calls out as loud as she can, letting her voice echo around the empty space. It makes it feel all the more empty as she does. She'd rather run around slamming open doors trying to find him as usual, but with her busted leg, that's not happening any time soon. [break][break]

So all she does is shout.[break][break]

The spartan backrooms of the gym have been commandeered. When Tsubaki enters, she sees not one lone man, but a plethora of them. A spacious waiting room has been converted into a workspace for a dozen or more HBIC spooks and office workers. Recon missions are being coordinated, troops are rallied, orders are given.[break][break]
In the center of it all, helping coordinate across departments, is the man Tsubaki looks for. His eyes are distant, accompanying stern lips. Those around him listen with some deference and great respect. Rumors have begun to spread that he died and crawled his way back from the other side.[break][break]
He’s smoking a cigar. Despite modern opinions on cigar smoke, no one tells him to stop. This is, after all, his space. His office. His lair.[break][break]
“Baki.” Turning like some statue made from stone, he says that over the flurry of activity. “Arceus, you’ve been beat up.” Crossing the distance between them, he limps. Every step is a strain, but he refuses help. Although his left arm moves with the motion of his body, it does so slowly.[break][break]
“Come on. Let’s go outside. Get some fresh air.”[break][break]
And, inevitably, when she follows, he slumps down where no one can see, against the side of his gym. Looking out at the sea, he huffs in frustration.[break][break]
“Heavy casualties, human and pokemon alike, and they all died for jack shit.”

There was no way Michael Navidson could die. All that denial had kept her emotions in check, like a dam. No way she'd believe something so stupid.[break][break]

But the moment she saw him, that dam burst. A wave of relief washed over her, overwhelmed with emotion.[break][break]

Tears just started falling silently. They wouldn't stop. No matter what she did, she just kept wiping them away. [break][break]

"Fuck. The hell's wrong with me."[break][break]

She hadn't cried in nearly five years, since that fateful night that set her on the path of defecting from Rocket forever. It was like five years worth of tears came pouring out all at once.[break][break]

"Fuck, fuck... what the fuck..."[break][break]

She could barely walk on crutches as she wiped the tears away, but finally she managed around the corner with the man's help. To see him so beat up like this, it made everything even worse. As he slumped against the wall, the tears doubled.[break][break]

"Arceus, you look like shit. What do you think you're doing? Going out there, getting hurt like that!?"[break][break]

It was selfish to dress him down like this, but there was one damned person in this whole region who understood her. One damned person who gave her a chance at a new life. If something had happened to him, then...[break][break]

"Someone said YOU died, Navy! You look near dead on your feet as it is, what the HELL!?"[break][break]

Relief gives way to anger, realizing how fragile it all was. All it took was one look at the man to see that.[break][break]

“Matter of fact,” there’s no point in hiding anything from her, “I died.” The words are punctuated by dryness and a drag off the cigar. Perhaps death is a matter to be spoken of with some gravity, but all he feels at his own demise is a hollow sensation in the pit of his stomach. It feels like he’s dodged the mother of all bullets. Rolled green on the roulette wheel. Cheated the reaper.[break][break]
If he’s learned anything, consorting with so many extraordinary people, hearing all their stories, it’s that you can’t run forever. Something always catches up with you. It happened to Skyler Dross when she lost control of Kyogre, after whatever happened in Kanto, Matias Silph when he got hit by the crazy train.[break][break]
One day, he supposes, the reaper really will have its due. Not today. Not here. Not while he has something to protect.[break][break]
“Kyle brought me back.” He adds. “Ho-oh lets him do that. Lucky me. Apparently, Isaac can do something like it. That’s two people on our side who can do that.” He wonders if Rocket has a power equal to that.[break][break]
“Fought one of their underbosses. . Probably the strongest guy Rocket’s got.” Beneath the beard, his lips form a smile. “Learned a little secret of his. Guy thought I took it to my grave ‘til he saw me riding Silver Bullet.”[break][break]
“How ‘bout you, Baki? How’d things go on your end?”

Baki doesn't process those words at first.[break][break]

They don't make any sense. [break][break]

Death was the end. It meant you were over. Finished. Every creature for all time had that baked into the deepest parts of their brains. It encompassed everything, was more true than thought and consciousness itself. All things know, once you die, that's it.[break][break]

But Michael Navidson was so stubborn he wouldn't even let that lie, huh?[break][break]

"What d'you fuckin' mean you DIED?"[break][break]

The nonchalant way he says it rubs her the wrong way. The way he gets his fill of smoke with a drag, like he hasn't gotten his fill of ash in his lungs already. [break][break]

She shoots him a deathly glare, one to make him die right there on the spot. Even then, he'd just rise again, wouldn't he?[break][break]

"You're... so, so..."[break][break]

At some point, words fail. She doesn't even know what she wants to say. The fact he'd rush into battle and die, leave her and behind like that... if not for the fact was there, they wouldn't even be having this conversation, but he's carrying on like it's the most natural thing in the world. [break][break]

"Fuck, you're just stupid. Get a little smarter, Navy! You can't change the world running at stuff and fucking dying! Next time your old buddy's not gonna be there, and then what!? Am I gonna have to go to Mount Pyre to have a simple fucking conversation like this!?"[break][break]

The future he pushed her toward even when she'd given up, and it seems like he doesn't even wanna be there to see her progress along that path. When it comes to graduation, love, all things that're part of a normal life he wanted so bad for her, he'll just end up dead in the next flashpoint and miss it all at this rate.[break][break]

Worst of all, he doesn't realize he's putting the most important thing at stake when he runs suicidal missions like this -- a place the girl belongs, her home, the only person who's ever taken the time to understand her.[break][break]

"I-I..."[break][break]

His questions are forgotten, utterly irrelevant.[break][break]

Baki crosses the distance between them clumsily, hobbling on her cast as she lets her crutches fall to the ground. Supporting herself by one hand on his shoulder, she pushes him back against the wall and stares deep into his dumb, gray eyes. [break][break]

Her expression is pleading, tears at the corner of her vision as she tries to process his betrayal, the person telling her to live going off and dying just like that -- his ghost looking back at her now, still flesh and blood. She opens her mouth like she's about to speak, but still can't find the words. Instead she winds up and slugs him straight-on in the nose, crack of cartilage resounding through the air.[break][break]

His gray eyes look at her, two pools that betray nothing of the thoughts behind the eyes. They stare at her for a long, long time. At last, he breaks the silence with motion. Reaching down, he pulls the short girl into a hug.[break][break]
“I know, Baki. I know.” If he wasn’t extremely lucky, he’d be dead. Gone forever. He’d have broken promises made to her, Kyle, , and Arceus knows how many other people. They’d say riveting words at his funeral, and then he would be gone. Another warrior of this war, gone too soon.[break][break]
While he holds her, he cracks his nose back into place. This is the sort of injury he will see about. Crooked noses suck.[break][break]
“I’ll be careful. Gotta be, if I wanna be there for you when you get graduate. When you find the right guy. When this war’s over and you figure out what peace looks like. Gotta be there for you every step of the way.”

Baki looks down at Navy slumped against the wall, then clumsily plants herself on the ground beside him. Cast on her leg, it's hard to kneel or crouch, but she's not planning on going anywhere. Not with Navy in this condition.[break][break]

"Y'know... I 'found' her in one of those underground storage facilities Rocket's got. A million stolen pokeballs, and hers was the only one I could find that wasn't damaged. She's the only reason I made it out when some giant dragon collapsed a building on our heads, the day all those riots sprung up. [break][break]

"Was ready to kill me at first, til I told her I hated Rocket as much as she did. Promised I'd bring her back to the forest she was stolen from, one day... but, y'know...[break][break]

"Now I think of it, Rocket prolly razed that, too."[break][break]

The dream of going back home sustained her. That forest would always exist, long as Baki held it in her mind. Whether it was still standing or not mattered much less than the idea of it.[break][break]

“She ain’t dead, Baki. Not as long as you’re alive. Her and all the others you lost…they only ever die when you do.” Letting go, he slumps back into a chair. Arceus bless these townsfolk, they put chairs everywhere when there’s buildings clustered together.[break][break]
“That’s what’s so fucked up about us using Pokemon. They love us. They really, truly love us. I wonder how many of ‘em understand what they’re getting into when they fight. Look at the damn things. They have kid’s eyes. Doubt they even understand what death is ‘til they go.”[break][break]
“There’ll be a day, not too long from now, when you’ll get it. Arceus, you gotta live until you can get there. Got, got an offer, from Goode.” Coughing into his right hand, he looks up at her. He thinks, not for the first time, that she’s still so young, despite everything. War has robbed her of a proper youth. She’ll be eighteen soon. “She wants me…to be on the elite 4.” The breathes are strained, like the fire’s finally dying in his lungs. “And I gotta find someone to take over the gym eventually, if I take her up on that.”

It was fine that he was deeply flawed, begging everyone around him to be perfect, to strive for more, while ignoring it himself. This stifling hypocrisy wasn't something she missed. Suddenly, she's reminded of the reasons she left for Ever Grande again.[break][break]

"I get it NOW, Navy. What I'm still here for, what I've gotta do. Whether I die or not doing it, I couldn't live with myself if I did nothing. Might as well be dead already if I can't fight. Age won't change my mind."[break][break]

She glares at him. The way he talks down to her, it's humiliating.[break][break]

He truly sees her as a child. HIS child. [break][break]

Those eyes are the begging eyes of a father who doesn't want to see his child go off to war. Who doesn't want to lose his daughter again due to matters completely outside his control. They're oppressive. [break][break]

More than that, they mean she can't just reject him outright. [break][break]

That pisses her off more than anything, the fact that he truly, genuinely cares for her. [break][break]

Besides, he thinks it would be good for her. Planting roots. Helping people. Training younger trainers.[break][break]
“Besides…been years since Hoenn’s had a proper poison gym leader.” Maybe because poison is one of Rocket’s weapons. It’s no fitting tool for those on the side of the angels. If they are to win this war, they must learn how to combat that, too. Navy prays she’ll see reason.[break][break]
